Alltech Feed Survey: Trend reveals 14% increase in global feed tonnage over last five years

The facts are undeniable. The world’s population is set to skyrocket in the next few years and global consumers with more available cash flow are now filling their plates with protein. In order to meet this increased demand for meat, milk and eggs, the feed industry must keep up its end of the deal and, according to Alltech’s latest Global Feed Survey, feed mills worldwide have demonstrated their commitment over the past five years.

Alltech’s fifth annual Global Feed Survey indicates international feed tonnage is now estimated at 995.6 million metric tons, a 2 percent increase over last year and a 14 percent increase since the company first published survey results in 2011.

The 2016 survey showed poultry feed has the market share with 47 percent and is growing faster than any other species. As a region, Europe saw the most growth, up 10.5 million metric tons over last year, with the largest contributions coming from Russia, Turkey, Belarus and Poland. The top three leaders, China, United States and Brazil, all reported feed mill consolidation.

The data collection is no small feat. Information is gathered from 131 countries through information obtained in partnership with local feed associations and Alltech’s sales team, who visit more than 32,000 feed mills annually.
